Green Card Renewals

Renewal of Alien Registration Receipt Cards (Green Cards)

Alien Registration Receipt Cards, commonly known as Green Cards, generally expire every ten years. Holders must apply to renew their cards with the USCIS on Form-I-90.

When an I-90 is filed with the USCIS, the applicant is instructed to appear at an Application Support Center (ASC) to submit biometrics. The USCIS conducts a background check to determine if the holder has a criminal record. When the I-90 is approved, the holder receives a new card in the mail.

It should be noted that even if a person’s Alien Registration Receipt Card has expired, the person is still considered a U.S. lawful permanent resident unless he/she abandons residency or an Immigration Judge orders U.S. lawful permanent residence status terminated.
