Athletes and Entertainers: Limits on P Visas

P-1 Athletes are given an initial period of five years approval with one five year extension permitted. A P-1 petition for an athletic team or entertainment group may not be approved for longer than one year. P-2, P-3 and P essential support personnel petitions are valid for up to one year. Extensions are granted in one year increments.

All P visa holders must be employees. Normally self-employed occupations may receive P status only if sponsored by an employer, U.S. sponsor, or established U.S. agent
